Tips to Grow Your Discord Server in 2021

Writer: William CookWilliam Cook

Hey everyone! We’ll be going over a couple of things you can utilize in order to grow your Discord server. It may seem difficult at first, but once you get to grips with the various methods that can help you grow your server as well as some advice: you can utilize these ways to get your server to the top.

Bump Bots

Bumping on Discord is where your server is promoted to other servers using the same bump bot. For example, I could “bump” my server with a command using “XYZ Bump” and all the other servers using “XYZ Bump” would have your server advert in a bump channel (where all the advertisements go). This is an effective method of promotion because there will be a huge reach depending on how many servers use that bot in their server.

We can recommend the following bots for your use:

Server Lists

Discord server lists are essentially ad-hoc, server discovery websites that can be utilized to discover Discord servers of any category easily. Of course, you can add your own server to them as well. They are very useful as not only they appear to a wide audience but also on search engines such as Google, DuckDuckGo, Yandex and so forth. For example: if you search up “Discord Advertising Server” on Google, then you would find a lot of the results to come from these Discord Server Lists.

Some server lists we can recommend and have proven to benefit/work are:

As you can see, some of them utilize voting/bump systems that allow your server to rank higher. We recommend bumping your server within all those sites as much as possible because it allows for more exposure. You could also have someone as part of your staff team to bump your server, so you can focus on other parts of growing your community.

Advertising servers

Advertising servers are one of the more-viable and oldest methods (since 2016) at the forefront of promoting your Discord server. This is because 99% of people in the server is most likely either looking for a server to join or would want to advertise their own. There are many advertising servers you can find within the Discord server lists we have talked about above, but if you weren’t aware…

insert shameless self-plug here

We have our very own advertising server, called Advertise Your Server if you haven’t saw already on the blog you are currently on. It is the largest advertising server on Discord itself, with over 50,000 members and growing every day; there is a huge outreach of people wanting to join your server. We have many channels of any type to advertise in, ranging from anime/manga, to community servers and anything else.

Make sure upon arrival of our server, that you advertise within the channels inside of the Advertise Here category if you scroll down a bit. We know there is a lot of channels to go through, these are all to suit your server.

Ensure to advertise constantly, utilizing all of your advertisements per day you can get your hands on so you aren’t flooded out by the other people advertising their server (since it’s a large server). If you’re not ready to advertise yet, we have an active community over at the lounge during the day (depending on your timezone) to talk with. You can learn more about our server itself and get grips with it via our website: https://aysdiscord.com or if you’re ready, join our Discord server using our invite link: https://discord.gg/promote.

Partnering with other servers

Server partnerships (not to be confused with Discord’s official Partner system) is a mutual agreement between two servers to promote each other’s servers in a partnership channel; pretty simple concept.

If you are a bit stuck on which servers to partner with, we have 2 dedicated channels in our very own advertising server (read above section) to help you find potential servers to partner with ranging from certain sizes:

  • Servers looking to partner with 1–500 members

  • Servers looking to partner with over 500+ members

For smaller servers, we would recommend looking for partners within the 1–500 members section and vice-versa for guaranteed results or servers that match up with your style.

Make your server unique

One of the key tips in having success with a Discord server is picking a unique topic to base your server around, or offer something that other servers do not offer. Give people a reason to join your server. For example, we would avoid creating a general community server unless your server is going to have something that makes it stand out from the crowd; since there are already other servers that exist for that purpose. If you have the money for it, you can also invest a tiny bit in giveaways to try persuade or convince more people to join your server. You could trial it out initially with a Nitro Classic giveaway (something commonly desired within Discord), and if it benefits your server then you could do it once in a blue moon or whenever you feel is the right time.

Interact with your community

Another thing that is important is to interact with your server. Start up a conversation with other people to ignite a bit of activity. A way to accomplish this is to have a general talk channel if you don’t have one already (it could be named #the-lounge, #general-lounge, etc). As you talk, others who are new to the server will see that there is something going on within your server and will be more inclined to stay in it: whether it’s just to lurk or to participate in the conversation itself. More activity is 👍.

In conclusion…

We have listed a lot of ways in order to grow your server. It may seem overwhelming, but you can do certain tasks or have a friend help you out. Please be aware though, like most things: it could take time to grow your server or before it gains traction, so ensure that you have patience and that you are doing everything you can to engage with your community. After all, if you don’t involve yourself within your community, who will? Albeit, we bid you great luck in growing your server! Who knows, maybe it could end up being one of the biggest servers on Discord if you’re lucky enough 😉
